What is the NJ Amnesty Program?
The NJ Amnesty Program offers motorists with at least $500 in outstanding tolls and fees a 25 percent discount on the balance owed to NJ E-ZPass if they settle their obligation in full. Eligible motorists who do not take advantage of this first ever NJ E-ZPass Amnesty Program before it ends on November 28, 2025, risk losing their vehicle registration privileges in New Jersey, being reported to credit agencies, or facing civil or criminal charges.
How can I check to see if I am eligible for the Amnesty Program?
I don’t live in New Jersey. Do I have to pay my outstanding balance?
Yes. The same legislation that created the Amnesty Program authorizes New Jersey to enter reciprocity agreements with other states. Your motor vehicle registration privileges in your home state could be at risk if you fail to pay your NJ E-ZPass obligations.
What if I can’t afford to pay my violations?
If you cannot pay your violation amounts in full, contact a NJ E-ZPass Customer Service Center at 973-368-1425, to speak with a violations specialist.
What if I am already on a payment plan?
You should continue to make your payments to avoid further action.
What will happen if I already have a registration hold on my account?
The current motor vehicle registration hold will remain until the outstanding balance is paid in full.

How can I add money to my NJ E-ZPass account balance?
Automatic replenishment with a credit card is the easiest and most efficient payment method. Your card will be charged automatically whenever your account balance falls below your replenishment threshold, which is based on your usage. You can add multiple payment methods to your NJ E-ZPass account to make sure payments do not fail. For your convenience, NJ E-ZPass accepts American Express, Visa, MasterCard, and Discover. You can also add money to your account balance with cash, check, money order, Apple Pay/Google Pay, Pay Pal, debit card, or by checking account or savings account.
If I do not opt for automatic replenishment, how do I maintain an adequate balance in my account?
You will need to remember to check your account balance every time you are going to use a toll facility. That will be the only way to ensure sufficient funds are in your account. When your balance is low, you can deposit money in your account by check by sending a check payable to NJ E-ZPass to:
NJ E-ZPass Customer Service Center
P.O. Box 4973
Trenton, NJ 08650
Be sure to include your NJ E-ZPass account number on the check. You can also deposit funds by cash. To do so, you will need to visit one our Customer Service Centers. Do not send cash payments in the mail.
Once I’ve opened an NJ E-ZPass account, what do I need to do to avoid receiving a violation notice or a Toll Bill?
- Keep an adequate balance in your account. If you choose automatic replenishment, keeping an adequate balance means making sure the credit card (or cards) on your account have not expired and are in good standing.
- Install your tag correctly. It should be mounted in the proper place. You should not let it slide around on your dashboard. You should not hold it in your hand and wave it at the equipment as you pass a tolling location.
- List current vehicle registration information on your account. If a tag does not read for some reason, an image of your license plate will be captured in the lane. NJ E-ZPass will use the image to connect your vehicle to your NJ E-ZPass
- Keep your contact information current on your account. That will enable NJ E-ZPass to reach out to you if there is a problem.
Do I need to register all my vehicles to my NJ E-ZPass account?
Yes. To avoid receiving a violation notice, make sure all of your vehicles are registered to your account.
Do I need to register a rental vehicle to my NJ E-ZPass account?
Yes, to avoid receiving a violation notice, it is recommended that you register your rental vehicle. To do that, log into your NJ E-ZPass account at ezpassnj.com, go to the “Tags/Vehicles” drop down menu and select “Vehicle List” and "Add a Vehicle". Check the "Rental Vehicle" box and enter the Starting Date/Time and Ending Date/Time to ensure that only tolls incurred by you are posted to your NJ E-ZPassaccount. Note that the Starting Date must be the current date and cannot be back dated. The Ending Date/Time may be any day/time after the Starting Date/Time. Affixing an active tag to the rental vehicle windshield is recommended however, please remember to remove the tag at the end of your rental period.
What is the difference between a toll-by-plate invoice and a violation notice?
A Toll-By-Plate invoice is a statement sent to a motorist who has used an all-electronic tolling (AET) facility. At toll roads, bridges, and tunnels that have adopted all-electronic tolling systems, motorists do not have the option of paying with cash. Instead, either the toll will be charged to their E-ZPass accounts, or they will be identified by their license plates and a bill for the toll amount will be sent to their homes.
At non-AET roads, bridges, and tunnels, motorists are obligated to pay the toll at the tolling location, either through an E-ZPass transaction or with cash. If a motorist fails to pay at the tolling location, she or he will receive a violation notice demanding payment of the toll plus an administrative fee.
